9 Things Ive Learned About Writing by Teaching Freshmen to Write The end of this academic year marks my tenth year of teaching freshmen to write. From dedicated writing seminars to writing-intensive literature courses, I have spent much of my time in the classroom trying to help freshmen be better writers. When I first started, I was a Strunk and White apostle. Good writing was clean, clear, and concise. I still believe that, but what Ive learned from trying to teach is that much of what makes writing hard has little to do with the sentences on the page. Writing well isnt just about using commas correctly or choosing strong verbs; its also about understanding yourself, your audience, and what the goals of writing are. So here are nine things I didnt know about writing well until I started teaching 18-year-olds how to write. Care To write the best version of whatever it is you are working on, youve got to find some way to care about it. For some folks, this is a grade or a paycheck. For others, it will be the idea or issue itself. In my experience, caring about a grade or a paycheck does not produce the same quality of work that caring about the project itself does. If you are writing for yourself, this is easier to do. If you are writing for an assignment, you have to figure out what in the parameters of that assignment you can care about enough to spur your best thinking and effort. Writing about what you care about is almost always a better tactic than writing about what you think a professor or boss cares about. The first question you should ask yourself when starting a new project is What about this do I care about the most? If you can identify and focus on that, you are off to a damn fine start. Use Your Moods There is no ideal time to write, but there is an ideal time for every stage of the writing process. In general, brainstorm and draft when you are well-rested, well-fed, and generally feeling good. Your creative and associative mind works best during these times. Most people who like to write in the mornings do so because they have slept, eaten, and caffeinated. When you are tired and lower-energy, edit, proof, and revise. When you are somewhat fatigued, your creative mind abates and your critical, analytical mind is more active. You are more likely to identify logical mistakes and see the faults with what youve done. As strange as it sounds, only working on  your project when you are feeling your best doesnt necessarily produce the best work. Know Your Strengths and Weaknesses This isnt so that you can fix your weaknesses, but to highlight your strengths. I think most people can get much better at writing, but I dont believe all people can do every writing thing well. Better, maybe, but for most of us, mastery of every writing skill and technique is asking too much. Instead, knowing what you struggle with can help you work around it or replace it with something you are good at. For me, I am good at interpretation, but relatively bad at writing context and supplementary information. So I know to craft writing projects for myself that focus on interpretation and less on reportage and the clear transmission of information. Get Comfortable with Discomfort It may well be that there are writers out there who sit down and write, blissfully confident in the quality of their work. It also may well be that I am typing this on the back of a sentient unicorn. But for most of us, writing doesnt usually feel great. It is a stressful process marked by indecision, procrastination, and fear. Knowing that it is not only OK but also the average experience of writing can help us feel better about the stress. It doesnt go away, but we can feel less lonely and powerless. As your writing improves, you will your ability to tackle increasingly difficult writing tasks. If you dont try more difficult writing tasks, you wont get better. So if you are trying to get better, writing is always going to be hard.  You are going to spend your whole life learning how to write, and then you are going to die. Dont expect ever to feel like youve mastered it. Answer Rather Than Prove Unless you are a lawyer, logician, or mathematician, your writing assignment isnt about proving something. The five-paragraph thesis model many are taught in high school and after is predicated on the idea that an essay should prove a thesis. This is ridiculous. The vast majority of writing tasks deal with the unprovable. Instead, answer a question as best as you can. Two warnings here. First, the question should be a real question, not a strawman or a rhetorical question. Ideally, it is a real question you have that is as of yet unanswered. If you are writing about a question to which you already have an answer, you will more likely tell your reader what to think than get them to think along with you. Second, you have to answer the question. The openness of writing to a question sometimes leads writers to think that they can equivocate or dodge. It doesnt work. Ask a question and then use your writing to offer the best answer you can. Write for an Audience Your writing will be better if you have a specific audience in mind. This can be a group of people or it can be an individual. This will help you focus on the aspects of your project that your specific audience needs the most. What do they know? What do they care about? What ideas do they have already? If a specific audience isnt identifiable, write for your smartest friend. Your smartest friend is likely to be both willing to listen and skeptical. This is an ideal foil for your writing. Forgive Yourself for Yesterday, Be Hard on Yourself Today, and Pretend Tomorrow Doesnt Exist I dont have a lot of advice about how to get your behind in the chair and work. I dont see how, where, and when my students write, so I dont know what the causes of their difficulty just getting to the keyboard might be. But Ive had enough conversations with them to know that much of their procrastination comes from regretting having not already worked and misestimating how much they will get done in the future. I think it goes a little something like this. A chance for working on a project comes and goes with no work being done. The next chance for work being done is then infused with some guilt about having not worked and some fear about getting the project done. The stress of working on the project now is then mortgaged into the future, when, presumably, the student will be both more productive and psychologically prepared. You can see the problem with this. I tell students who describe patterns like this to hold themselves accountable for work only at those moments when work is possible. Put another way: forgive yourself for the work you havent done, but also do not think about how much work you will get done tomorrow or the next day. This only works, though, if you recognize the need to be extremely hard on yourself for working right now.Fighting against both guilt (which looks to the past) and fear (which looks to the future) requires discipline to work in the present. Focus on Your Voice Rather Than Your Authority There is nothing easier to do as a reader than to detect claims of unearned authority. Appeals to belief, generalizations, and unsupported claims all signal someone who wants you to think they know what the hell they are talking about. Somewhat surprisingly, the best way to earn your readers trust is to admit what you dont know, understand, or care about. Anything that creates distance between you and your reader should go. Anything that creates intimacy between you and your reader should stay. Time is Your Frenemy Times role in a writing project is crucial, and it goes far beyond give yourself enough time. Even time management doesnt quite capture it. Ive fallen into using the phrase time deployment. This makes your relationship to your available time more active than mere management. So how should one deploy writing time?  Well, different parts of the writing process take different kinds of time. Two students who both spend twelve hours typing will produce projects of wildly varying quality if one of them sat down and worked for twelve hours in a row and one of them worked for six two-hour sessions. Moving your fingers over your keyboard and making words appear in your document is a task that, for most people, should only be done for about three hours at stretch. More than that and your available mental energy becomes depleted, and your work suffers. The second student will spend a higher percentage of their writing time with plenty of available mental energy. The effect of this cannot be overstated. The other reason the second student will produce better writing is that they will give themselves the chance to use interstitial time for thinking about their project. Once a project is started, it tends to stick around in your mind, filling those opportunities where your creative mind is available. Many of us notice this happening in the shower or while lying in bed or while driving a car. In each case, your creative mind has a chance to work on your project while you arent even at the keyboard. This is a case of deploying different kinds of time to work on different pieces of writing. So, not only does the second student write with more energy, they have actually spent more time working on the project at hand, even though, if asked, they will still only say the project took them the same twelve hours. All of your available hours are not the same and neither are the elements of writing. Mix and match to do more, do it better, and do it more enjoyably.

Those stereotypes still continue to affect the way we think about each other today and many of those stereotypes have been proven to be historically inaccurate. The movie Dances With Wolves, directed by actor Kevin Costner, does an excellent job in attempting to promote a greater acceptance, understanding, and sympathy towards Native American culture, instead of supporting the typical stereotype of Native Americans being nothing but brutal, blood thirsty savages. You then see the Pawnee Indians carrying off their new trophy, which was a piece of Timmons head. Another scene was when the camera first introduced the Indians into the movie by focusing in on a human skeleton that had an arrow stuck in the abdomen. Through scenes such as these, we are given an impression that the stereotypes about Indians being savages were indeed true. These ideas are changed as the movie begins to take a 180-degree turn and begins to focus on helping the viewer understand what the Indians were really all about. The Lakota tribe was very humane and had fairly strong familial bonds. It wasnt easy to be accepted by their tribe at first but once you were accepted then you were considered to be one of the family. In the film, Jon Dunbar tries to make friends with the Lakota Indians but is unsuccessful at first. Being a very persistent and kind hearted man he slowly gains the acceptance of the tribe. The first witness of this is when some tribesmen pay a visit to Jon Dunbars soldiers fort. To welcome them and to show them that he wanted to get to know them, he introduces them to coffee and sugar and even lets the tribe take some home. Methods Participants were given surveys in a classroom setting. The information gathered consisted of the soldiers age, gender, ethnicity, marital status, military rank, time served and number of children living at home. In order to measure the levels of posttraumatic and depressive symptoms, participants were asked a series of questions such as, if they had seen any counselor since returning including counselors for personal problems. Soldiers were asked to rate their feelings when exposed to certain situations, such as, whether they felt isolated or nervous around other people, or if they experienced bad dreams involving the horrible things which they endured while serving their time in either Iraq or Afghanistan. They also answered questions which involved rating their satisfaction with life. Results After the research was calculated it was determined that almost half of the participants reported symptoms of posttraumatic stress, depressive symptoms or both. Soldiers returning from Iraq reported higher levels of posttraumatic stress than those returning from Afghanistan and were more likley to seek counseling. However, soldiers returning from Iraq were more satisfied with life than those returning from Afghanistan. It was shown in soldiers returning from both Iraq and Afghanistan that being separated or divorced was related to higher levels of posttraumatic stress and depressive symptoms. Soldier who were single or separated were more likely to seek counseling than soldiers who were married. Soldiers of a higher ranking were less likely to report symptoms. Those who had counseling prior to redeployment were more likely to report symptoms. Problems One problem with this study would be that the soldiers involved volunteered to participate in this research. I believe it would have been better to test soldiers at random therefore you would possibly have a much different outcome if the soldiers tested were not already willing to offer up this personal information. Or by handpicking the participants the researchers would have a more controlled experiment. I see the ratio of white males to ethnic males in this study to be a problem also. More than half of the soldiers in this study were white males. They should include a higher number of men from other ethnic groups or do a separate study on each ethnic group of soldiers in order to have a more accurate conclusion which could be referenced by the appropriate group. A clear issue to me is the almost invisible female presence in this study and that only six percent of soldiers involved were women. It is obvious the researchers should either include more women or make this study specifically male oriented. Lastly, the lack of knowledge concerning the lives of the soldiers before they were deployed threatens the results of this study. Not knowing what their exact mental state was before being exposed to highly stressful situations makes it hard to determine if the results are accurate. As for trying to determine a solution for this, it is difficult to say what could be done to measure this. Conclusion After reading this article I would conclude that soldiers returning from war are highly likely to show signs of posttraumatic stress and or depressive symptoms. The research showed that soldiers who weren’t married were more likely to report depressive symptoms. I am not sure if this means they are more depressed or if it is just that married soldiers are less likely to report the depression. It could be that married men choose not to come forward and admit symptoms in order to appear strong and continuously brave to their family. The results could also mean having a family and a strong social support system could help aid the soldiers. I feel there were many faults in this study and it is mainly directed towards soldiers who are male, white and married. Also, the strictly volunteer basis of this study makes it hard to determine acurately how many soldiers actualy suffer from PTSD or are likely to show symptoms after returning from war. This simile brings a rustic country life into the poem, it also gives some geographical information, which is, they are fairly close to Scotland. The repetition of heart in this poem is very important, it is said five or more times, its used because of its implications, a heart is the sign for love, love for nature, and Michaels love for Luke. around the boisterous brook, this is an example of a lliteration, its here to present to the ear the sound of the brook bubbling, and boisterously flowing down the hillside. One of the main themes in the story is religion. And, when Luke is young he is closer to nature and so God, than Michael is, but as he grows older, and leaves for the city, he gets more and more aware of money, greed, lust and so on, he gets more and more corrupted, and further and further away from nature and God. In this poem nature and God are portrayed to be one and the same, using a capital letter for nature suggests its importance, yet having felt the power of Nature. When talking of the power and beauty of nature I believe it is talking of the power of God. The names Michael and Luke are Biblical, also words like covenant instead of contract are used. Which adds a religious dimension to the agreement about the building of the sheepfold. Symbolism is used often in the poem, such as the oak, the oak is obviously a part of nature, after the house has gone, and all memories of the occupants disappeared, the tree remains, nature moves on The cottage was named the Evening Star is gone- the ploughshare has been through the ground on which it stood; great changes have been wrought in all the neighbourhood: yet the oak is left. The sheepfold is also a strong symbol. When nature prevails with the tree, the sheepfold does not, the stones are there but man does not triumph, since the sheepfold, despite all efforts was never completed and the remain of the unfinished sheep-fold may be seen. The poem is narrative, the persona of the author comments on events, and describes them, as he wants. Dialogue is scarcely used, but it does appear more and more by the end, Thou must go. The dialogue is used so we can hear them, when reading their exact words our imagination pictures them. Wordsworth has given Michael a noble voice; the words used are not affected by dialect. Nay, dont take it so, I see that these are thing I need not speak. There is an example of interior monologue, strangely by Isabel, who does not appear much in this poem, I believe this monologue is there to introduce her point of view, and fears. Theres Richard Bateman she thought to herself. I believe this poem to be a very effective one, portraying its view through the means of a short story. Wordsworths range of literary skills is made obvious. They add to the interest and enjoyment for the reader. Yet I dont agree. Im sure that city goers are just as close to God as farmers are, some even closer, but one thing I do agree with, praying in an old stone church in a beautiful green valley is much nicer than praying in a dark brick chapel, in the middle of the smog of London. Not because I believe a valley is closer to God than a London street, but because of the peacefulness of the valley, its quiet there. Which gives you more opportunity to pray. Next I will discuss Tis a beauteous evening Its a sonnet. A sonnet has clearly defined rules. It has fourteen lines, an octave and a sestet. There are ten syllables in each line. There is a rhyme pattern, but poets vary this. The theme in this sonnet is of a young girl, who is walking the coast with Wordsworths persona. They look out over the sea, and the natural world. Its beautiful, and even though Wordsworths persona appreciates it more, and thanked God for it, he still thought that the young girl is closer to God than he. Beauteous, is an archaic word, and probably was the day Wordsworth wrote it, he used it because of the romance attached to it. Beauteous, it sounds so calm and loving. The next two adjectives reinforce this; they being calm and free. In the second line the holy dimension is introduced for the first time, using an adjective, which is holy and a noun, nun. Again reinforcing the calmness is the word quiet. The man is breathless with adoration at the beauty of the view. There is an use of enjambment here, broad sun, is sinking down in its tranquillity. This is used because the sun will sink regardless, it is constantly there, the sun will always rise and fall on earth. Repeatedly the calm atmosphere is strengthened, using tranquillity. The emphasis is now shifted from sight to sound. Starting the line with listen. With sound a strong theme arises; nature is everlasting, people die, ho uses crumble, and cars break down, but nature prevails. This theme is introduced through the form of the sea. Which is personified by the mighty being, its continued existence is displayed by the words eternal and everlastingly. Here is the Volta, again changing the emphasis, from the view to the child, this major shift in emphasis is purposely put here, since in after Volta the story is given, in the octave the situation is described. In this line we find out the child is a female child, it explains even though the child doesnt think of God, Untouched by solemn thought, it doesnt mean that she is therefore less di vine.

The Marshall Plan - Rebuilding Western Europe After WW2 The Marshall Plan was a massive program of aid from the United States to sixteen western and southern European countries, aimed at helping economic renewal and strengthening democracy after the devastation of World War II. It was started in 1948 and was officially known as the European Recovery Program, or ERP, but is more commonly known as the Marshall Plan, after the man who announced it, US Secretary of State George C. Marshall. The Need for Aid The Second World War severely damaged the economies of Europe, leaving many in a parlous state: cities and factories had been bombed, transport links had been severed and agricultural production disrupted. Populations had been moved or destroyed, and a tremendous amount of capital had been spent on weapons and related products. Its not an exaggeration to say the continent was a wreck. 1946 Britain, a former world power, was close to bankruptcy and had to pull out of international agreements while in France and Italy there was inflation and unrest and the fear of starvation. Communist parties across the continent were benefiting from this economic turmoil, and this raised the chance Stalin could conquer the west through elections and revolutions, instead of having lost the chance when Allied troops pushed the Nazis back east. It looked like the defeat of the Nazis might cause the loss of the European markets for decades. Several ideas to aid the rebuilding of Europe had been proposed, from inflicting harsh reparations on Germany- a plan that had been tried after World War I and which appeared to have failed utterly to bring peace so wasnt used again - to the US giving aid and recreating someone to trade with. The Marshall Plan The US, also terrified that communist groups would gain further power- the Cold War was emerging and Soviet domination of Europe seemed a real danger- and wishing to secure European markets, opted for a program of financial aid. Announced on June 5th, 1947 by George Marshall, the European Recovery Program, ERP, called for a system of aid and loans, at first to all nations affected by the war. However, as plans for the ERP were being formalized,  Russian leader Stalin, afraid of US economic domination, refused the initiative and pressured the nations under his control into refusing aid despite a desperate need. The Plan in Action Once a committee of sixteen countries reported back favorably, the program was signed into US law on April 3, 1948. The Economic Cooperation Administration (ECA) was then created under Paul G. Hoffman, and between then and 1952, over $13 billion worth of aid was given. To assist in coordinating the program, the European nations created the Committee of European Economic Cooperation which helped form a four-year recovery program. The nations receiving were: Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, United Kingdom, and West Germany. Effects During the years of the plan, receiving nations experienced economic growth of between 15%-25%. Industry was quickly renewed and agricultural production sometimes exceeded pre-war levels. This boom helped push communist groups away from power and created an economic divide between the rich west and poor communist east as clear as the political one. The shortage of foreign currency was also alleviated allowing for more imports. Views of the Plan Winston Churchill described the plan as â€Å"the most unselfish act by any great power in history† and many have been happy to stay with this altruistic impression. However, some commentators have accused the United States of practicing a form of economic imperialism, tying the western nations of Europe to them just as the Soviet Union dominated the east, partly because acceptance into the plan required those nations to be open to US markets, partly because a great deal of the aid was used to purchase imports from the US, and partly because the sale of ‘military’ items to the east was banned. The Plan has also been called an attempt to persuade European nations to act continentally, rather than as a divided group of independent nations, prefiguring the EEC and the European Union. In addition, the success of the plan has been questioned. Some historians and economists attribute great success to it, while others, such as Tyler Cowen, claim the plan had little effec t and it was simply the local restoration of sound economic policy (and an end to vast warfare) which caused the rebound.

Steel Magnolias Theater Review :: essays research papers

In my theater class I was given the assignment of having to write a critical review of the play â€Å"Steel Magnolias,† by Robert Harling. So on the Wednesday before the holiday weekend (Rosh-Ha-Shana) I decided to make the trip over to the Hand Chapel on the Mount Vernon Campus, to see this play that I had already convinced myself was going to be dreadful, or at least that was what I wanted myself to believe. It was for this reason that in the beginning I wanted to be over critical and to pick apart every little detail. There was only one problem, the fact I thought the play was absolutely terrific. The caliber of this play was far superior to that which I had expected. Although, there were a few minor complaints I did have they hardly took away from the overall production. In my opinion, the most successful aspect in this play was the actresses, not just because they were good, but rather because they were incredibly believable. I did not feel that I was watching actors on the stage, rather that I was watching the lives of the six individuals unfold. They became their characters. A perfect example of this can be seen when Sabrina Hyman, who was playing the part of Truvy, was decorating the salon for Christmas and had to improv. While placing tinsel on the couch she was unable to keep it on the desired spot, because it kept falling off of the arm. Initially when she realized that the tinsel was not staying in its place she did not panic, as one would have thought. Instead she simply tried again, and then even a third time without showing any signs of a problem, she had to finally walk away without properly placing the tinsel where it should have been. This quick change in events did not throw her off in the least; she played it off like nothing was wron g. She played it off, as Truvy Jones would have in real life. Although I did feel that the acting in the play was truly amazing I did have two problems, and a couple of instances where I was given a reality check and reminded that it was just a play. My first complaint was that although Patricia Jenson and Jenny Towns did a terrific job, they were not able to play the part of elder women simply because of their age.

Art Imitates Life; Life Imitates Art Essay

Super Columbine Massacre RPG (SCMRPG) is a case of art imitates life. Danny Ledonne patterned his game after the infamous Columbine tragedy. He created characters and situations which are very similar to those that transpired on that fateful day. The question is, up to what extent does art start and stop imitating life? Are there any boundaries that should not be crossed? Are there any rules that should not be broken? These were some of the questions that Ledonne has been trying to answer regarding his game. He was criticized for being morally insensitive towards the feelings of those who were involved in Columbine. In this case, with regards to moral grounds, should a filmmaker or developer cease to create anything inspired by actual events? According to the one of the posts in Ledonne’s website, SCMRPG is one of the most important games in gaming history. It has discussed a significant awakening that no matter what anyone had done, in reference to the quote â€Å"we should have checked their rooms† voiced by one of the gunmen’s parents – there is nothing that could stop Harris and Klebold in their plan. It also showed how things started for the two boys and this sociological way of representing Harris and Klebold through SCMRPG might be a first step towards acceptance of video games as a legitimate medium for the expression of serious thoughts. SCMRPG also comprehensively dealt with the psychological profiles of both Harris and Klebold, which no one had ever done before (www. columbinegame. com). It has been said that the actions of Harris and Klebold were brought about by watching violent video games, which is an example of life imitates art. The pattern of execution and the detailed plan of going about the killing were blamed on the detailed video games as well as the music these boys listened to. But up to what extent can we blame art for the actions of a spectator? As Ledonne answered this question in relation the Dawson College shooting incident, he emphasized that merely playing a game that looks archaic does not encourage someone like Kimveer to go out and kill. In fact the game was devoid of all the gory details that gamers would typically want. Games do have effect on teenager violence but it’s not the only one to blame for it. The columbine massacre was a disaster waiting to happen. It just so happened that the 2 kids who committed the atrocious act were playing video games and that their favorite band was Marilyn Manson. The increasing incident of kids committing suicide due to bullying is alarming. As a coping mechanism for these 2 kids they wanted to hurt those people who hurt them but as kids, they made a very bad decision and very bad planning that they hurt other people as well. Klebold and Harris lost their direction in life and were not appropriately guided on how to overcome teenage emotions such as inadequacy and inferiority complex. Conclusion Super Columbine Massacre RPG was created to give gamers a feel of what Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold felt, with the intent of preventing another Harris or Klebold. However, moving aside artistic expression and the intent to save â€Å"potential† Harris or Klebold through human contact, looking at the game as an avid fan of computer games – there is not much to see actually. The 16-bit image that moves up and down and jumps from time to time gets a little bit boring. Nonetheless, the conversation between Klebold and Harris are a must-read. Ledonne had thoroughly researched the game that 80 percent of the dialogues were taken from Harris and Klebold’s own writings. The sounds used are a bit better than regular midi since it utilizes popular music which could actually make the â€Å"thinking† moments of the characters very effective. Too many literature have been written about the reasons why Harris and Klebold created such mayhem, but too little had been said about how these two boys were as much as a victim like those people they gunned down in Columbine. Almost as always, issues were being discussed in forums, articles were being published and documentaries were being aired. But, one media form that hasn’t been utilized till now was the gaming world. Ledonne wanted to change that by turning the silly world of gaming into a platform of more serious topics. He did so by creating SCMRPG. Ledonne on an interview by the Washington Post said that he would not create another game. SCMRPG was created with the intent of generating discussion and presenting a unique perspective on the events of Columbine. This may not be the future of gaming, but it is a step towards the future of how games will be treated and viewed in our culture–as artful, meaningful objects which represent the thoughts, ideas, dreams and nightmares of a unique creator (http://alt-games. com/? p=28). With regards to the objective of the game, I believe that it has amassed the intended attention and created an awareness regarding video games and violence. Ledonne had successfully generated a forum where families and loved ones of the Columbine incident could air their grievances (even though at the expense of the game).
